Q. What is a scalp reduction?
A. An alopecia (scalp) reduction, which is sometimes used in connection with hair transplantation, is a technique whereby part of the bald scalp on top of the head is surgically removed. Consider this a "facelift" for your scalp. This procedure reduces the total number of grafts needed because the bald area will be smaller. However this procedure is useful with only a small sub-set of patients and is not recommended for many patients because it can change the architecture and natural hair pattern of the scalp.

Q. What is the difference between the old traditional methods and the new advanced techniques of hair transplantation?
A. There is a world of difference. The traditional old method of hair transplantation involved using large grafts, punched out from the back of the head, which usually depleted and noticeably scarred the donor area. Those large grafts usually had 8-15 hairs per graft. Those grafts when uniformly and methodically inserted, usually with little knowledge or concern for angle or direction of hair growth pattern, gave much less than desirable results. Those are the old traditional hair transplantation jobs that you notice. Believe it or not they were the mainstay of hair transplantation up until just a few years ago.

Today, thankfully, there is a wealth of knowledge, new instruments and fine techniques. When in the right hands, hair transplantation can effectively reconstruct a natural pattern of hair growth and achieve extremely appealing results. Each individual graft is much smaller, (follicular units with one, two, three or four hair follicles per graft), and the total number of grafts transplanted per session ismuch greater than before (500 to 1,800 grafts or more, if needed). Grafts are carefully removed from the back of the head, as a thin donor strip, which maximizes graft yield and minimizes damage to the donor area. Even if you had several sessions performed, you could not tell anything had been removed from the donor area, because your hair will cover the donor area. Each graft is then carefully prepared from that strip and gently handled to maintain its vigor and vitality. The graft insertion process proceeds with a clear understanding of natural hair growth patterns, a recognition that direction and angle of hair growth are very important, as well as the proper size, location and number of grafts used, so that an extremely natural result can be achieved with minimal if any scarring in the grafted area, and without bandages. Even the local anesthesia techniques available today are improved and much more comfortable.
